In our Lectionary for the 5th Sunday of Lent, the Gospel was the compelling story of Jesus' return to Lazarus' house as Guest of Honour at a dinner to say 'Thank you' for the extraordinary gift Jesus had given to Lazarus - his life.
Surely, the atmosphere would have been one of great celebration - everything simply perfect.
The company was eclectic and included the 'charming' Judas.
One can imagine that as the party gathered momentum, Mary quickly decided on a startling gesture of honour to anoint Jesus feet with the most fragrant and expensive oil she kept for her personal use.
We are told the fragrance 'filled the whole house'.
Just imagine this!
Judas, quickly seized on this horrid waste pointing out the oil could hae been sold and the money given to the poor.
Indeed!
Strange! Judas had witnessed so many acts of Jesus which were all connected to the poor, either in health or mind, or sheer need.
These days experts have suggested the jar of oil would have been worth about $12,000 in our money!
What a wonderful gift it was from Mary!
Our little Church needs an Easter gift to enable us to have light and power for Easter ceremonies and beyond.
We have been fortunate that since I had the Church restored and wired against the day when we could afford to have the power connected, the neighbours have permitted us to draw power from them to run the lights, the organ and heating etc.
Sadly, this has suddenly come to an end due to their changed circumstances.
We need urgent help!
We do not need $12,000. . . . . . . . . . . just $2,000
We can only reward you with the fragrance of our prayers!
Every cent you send will have the scent of gratitude of a small community that will celebrate this season with you in the LIGHT of Easter and the POWER of the Resurrection!
Pax!
